Climate change is one of the greatest threats to the Arctic tundra. Due to an increase of pollution related activities that cause an increase in temperature, the Arctic tundra ecosystem has never been so vulnerable. The glaciers and ice that used to cover the waters are now almost non- existent in some areas. The melting of ice has directly impacted polar bears and their travel and hunting patterns. Old routes over frozen waters now cannot be used because there is no more ice. The melting of ice has also caused some polar bears to become stranded in the middle of the ocean and some end up dying of exhaustion. Many animals who live in the Arctic tundra rely on their physical appearance for protection or for an advantage. For example, Arctic Wolves and Foxes use their white coat to blend into the snow to sneak up on their prey. However, rising temperatures are prolonging summers in the Arctic tundra which results in a reduced amount of snow making it harder to find food for Arctic Wolves/ Foxes and other animals that rely on camouflaging into the snow.
